Early Career Researcher Event

Wednesday 14th October 2020

9:30am – 1pm: virtual event

The UKEV Society will host a special virtual event for early career researchers with flash research presentations, career advice workshops & insights into virtual assessments and examinations.

This half day event is aimed at all non-tenured early career researchers (MRes, PhD, RA, ECRs) with the aim of giving everyone an opportunity to present their work (or proposed programme of work) in an exciting, flash format. Following this, we are hosting a series of career focused events, centred around supporting our more junior members to establish their research career or explore alternative options to academia. We hope the event will provide a strong platform for networking, making new connections within the UKEV community and giving fist-hand insights into career options both inside and outside of academia.

The event will open with a session focused on 3 minute flash presentations. This is an all-encompassing session, from researchers right at the start of their projected research projects/PhDs, to members who are reaching the end of their projects and would benefit from the challenge of summarising their findings in one succinct, exciting flash talk!

This will be followed by a series of parallel sessions discussing topical issues for early career researchers, where members will have the opportunity to gain first-hand insights from those in the field, engage in open discussions and network with their peers and confirmed speakers:

Academic & Teaching Track

Professor David Carter: “Tips on how to do amazingly OK in academia!”

Jessy Ahluwalia: “Researchers in Schools – A Teacher Training route for PhD holders”

Scientific Industry

Dr Claire Pearce: “A career across academia & industry: A personal perspective and (hopefully!) handy hints”

Dr Shaheda “Ahmed: Academia or Industry? Making the right choice”

Fellowships

Dr Christopher Stewart: “A reflection on transitioning toward being a PI”

Dr Naveed Akbar: “An unsuccessful fellowship application is not the end”

Medical Writing/Liaison

Dr Gregory Lim: “A career in editing and publishing a medical journal”

Dr Laurienne Edgar: “A career in pharmaceutical medical affairs”

The Virtual Viva

We invite early career researchers to share their extracellular vesicle work through a 3 minute flash presentation using 1 PowerPoint slide. The committee will select a range of topics from submitted abstracts for presentation. The abstract submission for flash presentations is 1st October 2020 5pm BST.

Presenters of flash presentations will be notified by 2nd October 2020 with further instructions on how to prepare their presentations but are limited to 1 PowerPoint slide with no animations and this must be submitted to the committee by Friday 9th October 5pm BST.
